Some have speculated that this may be the last chance for the candidates for president to debate LGBT issues including gay marriage.
However, the candidates did not address these issues tonight and nobody during the debate asked the candidates about LGBT issues and rights. The main issues discussed instead were energy, gun control, the economy, job creation, taxes, immigration, contraception, and the Libyan consulate incident in which four US diplomats lost their lives.
Mitt Romney is opposed to all LGBT rights, including civil unions and gay marriage, and gay adoption. Mitt Romney is endorsed by the National Organization for Marriage, an activist group seeking to outlaw marriage for gay couples. Romney also supports a constitutional amendment that will ban both civil unions and gay marriage, even those enacted in the past.
On the other side President Obama has come out for gay marriage, has repealed 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' policy that prevented open service of gay soldiers, and has refused to defend the Defense of Marriage Act in court.
